Reflective Narrative
In spring 2022 I took SPAN 325, which had to do with the examination of Chicano films, including documentaries, some of which were based on real-life events. Throughout this class, I was able to understand the meaning of the films and the purposes and the message they were trying to deliver to the viewers. For example, these films showed how some Latin American countries had crucial economic problems ranging from not having drinkable water to people being murdered by the government for standing up for their rights. One of the films that impacted me the most was Even the Rain. This film was based on true real-life events. The film's historical context is the disappearance of hundreds of people. The “Dirty War” took place in Argentina from 1976-1983. This event was very hard for Argentinians, as many of them who thought differently were “disappeared” (kidnapped, tortured, and killed) by the government. The second film that impacted me was the City of God. This film showed us the cruel reality in the favelas in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil which I explored in this paper. The intention of this film was to address organized crime, poverty, corruption, lack of justice, lack of access to education, and the waste of young lives in the community. In addition, the film depicted not only the struggles and lack of basic needs but also how children need to sell drugs in order to survive. Finally, this course helped me to understand and have compassion for the survivors and the ones that lost their lives during these events.
