In the fall of 2023, I had to take SPAN 314, Spanish Applied Linguistics. In this class, I was taught how to analyze and have different perspectives on the different types of corrective feedback in the language classroom and the effectiveness of each. Throughout this course, we worked on describing the strengths and weaknesses of a variety of language teaching methodologies. For example, come up with ideas for effective methods and tools that support students' learning outcomes. For this class, I was given the task of choosing a book, evaluating the effectiveness of a textbook for Spanish as a heritage language, and then writing a Statement of teaching philosophy. In this statement, I exposed some issues students have but addressed them by utilizing important tools such as Technology, videos, and various student communicative activities to allow students to break out of their shells, contribute to the class, and, more importantly, find their favorite subjects and chase their dreams. I enjoyed doing this project. I developed the skills of analyzing and seeing each student's needs and ways of learning. Also, doing this document was very helpful in the way that Spanish Applied Linguistics is getting me ready for future job interviews and, most importantly, effective methods to support my scholars in developing knowledge and skills to become confident and critical thinkers. For example, I believe that Spanish is not just a school subject, but a powerful tool for understanding and navigating the world around us. My goal is to create a classroom environment that fosters curiosity, collaboration, and a growth mindset. Nevertheless, after this course, I gained the knowledge of identifying students' needs in their learning journals as well as promoting a healthy learning environment for each one of them. I had never experienced the freedom of picturing my instructional ideas, plans, and desires in a classroom. Lastly, I have to recognize and give credit to this course because I am confident that without the help given by my professor and the important tools she provided me with, I would be lost in the real teaching world. This course not only focuses on recognizing different ways of teaching but also adopting new ways to teach scholars to respect and take care of the diverse community we live in today without prejudice, so they can connect with peers and develop strong relationships that will help them in the future.
