Course Reflective Narratives
This fall 2022 semester I had to take Span 345, Bilingualism in the Spanish-Speaking World. The main thing I learned in this course was about different dialects, and the different concepts of bilingualism, including the dialects that exist in some areas around CSUMB. Also, we were able to examine and contradict the course book by Montrul (2013). This book details the different phases of learning a second language, and I identified myself with chapter 8 “the acquisition of a second language” as a teenager/adult. This chapter is mostly about the obstacles adults go through when learning a second language. This chapter also includes an explanation of input, interlanguage, error types, fossilization, motivation, and the critical period hypothesis. For this course, I had to do an investigation of how important bilingualism is in the areas of Salinas. By doing this investigation, I learned that bilingualism is becoming very popular and is a requirement for many jobs in the area. A great example of this is that Natividad Hospital just started to demand its workers to be fluent in both Spanish and English. In addition, we analyzed and discussed the different aspects of learning two languages simultaneously as infants and as adults. After this discussion, we found out the infants were strong in both languages and made no mistakes. On the other hand, we did not see the same results with adults, who make a lot more mistakes and have a harder time when code-switching due to the different inputs they were exposed to.
