MLO3: LITERARY AND CULTURAL KNOWLEDGE
MLO 3: LITERARY AND CULTURAL KNOWLEDGE
Students develop a reasonable understanding of the ways of thinking (ideas, beliefs, attitudes, values, philosophies), the behavioral practices (patterns of social interactions) and the cultural products – both tangible and intangible (for example, art, history, literature, music) of Hispanic societies.
Under this criterion, I have completed SPAN 304 Introduction to Hispanic Literature (Fall 2022) SPAN 325 Hispanic Cinema (Spring 2022), and SPAN 370 The Chicano Community (Spring 2022).
For this class, SPAN 370 I was able to learn about the examination of the cultural, social, economic, and political aspects of the Chicano community in a historical and contemporary context. It incorporates field observation and community studies that are taught in English. In this course, I learned about some of the big issues the Chicano community faces. Thanks to this course, I developed different ways and skills to assist this community, especially farmworkers that often get their voices taken away due to the fact that some of these people are migrants, and sometimes they are afraid to go against injustices at their workplace. One of the requirements for this class was to do research and a final presentation on a matter that was affecting the Chicano community and needed to be taken care of to make an improvement that would benefit this community. All of my classmates had different focuses, and some of those focuses were needing immediate attention. For my project, I decided to do research on how farmworkers are forced to work near pesticides. During this research, I learned that some farmworkers had been through some traumatic experiences, such as chronic illnesses and miscarriages due to exposure to pesticides. In addition, I was able to interview a victim of this matter, and she narrated how companies in Salinas took advantage of the migrant community and forced them to work around pesticides without secure protection for their safety and putting their lives on the line. These workers rarely complained about these illegal practices by these powerful companies. Not considering that thanks to these workers we have fruit, vegetables, etc. Finally, this course helped me understand how important it is to advocate for the people that believe they do not have the right to defend themselves from companies that do not give them protection and attention towards them.
