Integrative Narrative
I decided to pursue the Spanish major because after arriving from Mexico and entering the US educational system, I was afraid that I might lose my Spanish due to the presence of a new language in my daily life and learning English. This event motivated me to become a Spanish educator and make my family proud since my parents did not speak English, and we would communicate only in Spanish at home. I did not want to adopt Spanglish and not be able to communicate in either Spanish or English. Also, I wanted to spread my culture to the younger members of my family in my own language.
Since the beginning of my journey at CSUMB I have learned many things. I have discovered the lack of knowledge I had about some things. For example, I noticed that I did not know much about linguistics, languages, cultures, and rules that there were to follow. I had never experienced anything outside the Mexican culture but when took some HCOM courses and here I came across so many other cultures and different communities that also speak Spanish but have a unique dialect of Spanish I was speechless because I thought that all Spanish speakers had exactly the same way of talking, same rules, same words and this is when I learned that it is best to have a variety of ice cream favors. My main goal when I started my education at CSUMB was to accomplish and dominate the Latin cultures because I was sure I wanted to be a teacher.
Overall, I am very proud of myself and everything I have accomplished through my path at CSUMB. Professor, counselors, and classmates have all contributed to my success as a student at CSUMB. Also, they have pushed me to become a better person and reach my goal. Something I would like to emphasize is the great development I have reached in areas like oral presentations, my writing and my communications skills have gotten better thanks to the support I have received from my professors. CSUMB has provided me with some important tools to believe in myself, and that reflects in my grades and also the huge improvement I have made in my professional career. As mentioned before CSUMB has made me grow personally, and I would like to claim that I am convinced that I really want to teach at a high school level, I know I have the potential to impact the youths and also make a positive change in the community of Salinas since my goal is to become an educator in this area the course that made me realize that this is what I really want to do was the Service Learning class and parenting with a Harden middle school in Salinas. Doing my community hours at this site made me witness the struggles these students face on a daily basis. Also, having to experience what it is to be a migrant student has motivated me to become a resource for this community and help them have a bright future.
I am convinced that there is always something new to learn and to teach. I am planning to take more linguistic courses to develop and conquer a better understanding and my vocabulary. By doing this I am positive that this will help me to be prepared and spread my knowledge to my future students and rescue the culture, beliefs, and languages.
