Course number: SPAN 303
SPAN303 Identify the MLO the course meets: MLO2
Course description; short version: Reviews all phases of communication skills with practice in understanding, speaking, and writing grammatically correct Spanish. Teaches specific components of Spanish grammar: the Spanish verbal system, the subjunctive, ser versus estar, and other problematic aspects of grammar. Taught in Spanish. Long version: This course explores how Spanish grammar can vary depending on place, social group, and social situation, taking into consideration language attitudes (those of others and our own) in the examination of so-called ‘correct’ or textbook grammar. Through investigations of variability of grammar, students learn grammatical terminology and how to identify categories and constructions in Spanish (e.g. subject versus object pronoun) and examine why some varieties of Spanish are considered prestigious while others are not, drawing on current and historical sociopolitical contexts. Taught in Spanish.
This spring 2023 I am taking SPAN 303, Advanced Spanish Grammar. The criteria for this class are very straight forward, we have the responsibility to develop skills of a better use of linguistic terminology to identify Spanish constructions in discourse. Also, I am learning how to analyze the use of grammatical structures in Spanish discourse and to distinguish between prescriptive and descriptive approaches to grammar. In addition, I have been developing skills and strategies to conquer the goal of distinguishing between prescriptive and descriptive approaches to grammar. And the tasks of describing examples of linguistic variation in Spanish, and last but not least being able to explain how sociopolitical factors impact language attitudes. In this class, I did a project/research about code-switching, subjunctive, ser versus estar Spanish verbal system, and other problematic aspects of grammar. A requirement for this course was to work in groups, where each individual in the group was in charge of a specific area. For example, I was in char of the code-switching part some examples are that pitbul uses “ Creo en la karma, I believe in that for real” minuto 5:15 “ No tengo uno de verdad viene siendo maybe”. Son varios ejemplos que nos expresa para dar estos cambios que hoy en día son muy comunes en la nueva generación de jóvenes.` Por último, se observa que hace una repetición de sus declaraciones en inglés y después lo repite en español. The research was based on interview of the famos cuban singer Pitbul. For this project we were given the task of analyzing and identifying and explaining why pitbull language contains so many specific components such as Spanish grammar: the Spanish verbal system, the subjunctive, ser versus estar, and other problematic aspects of grammar. Nevertheless, this course has been very helpful and thoughtful because it provided me with some useful tools. For example, it has taught me how to identify and conjugate the verse in the present, past, and future, as well as in the conditional and subjunctive. Before taking this course, I struggled a little bit with this part, but now I feel a lot more confident and really want to spread my knowledge in the future.
