Course Reflective Narratives
During the fall 2022 semester, I had to take SPAN 301s. SL in the Latino Community is a very interesting course because it focuses on empowering and preparing us to deal with the complexities of a globalized world. As well as to learn to be an advocate for the Latino community since they are lacking in social justice, and they do not have resources that support them in their daily lives. For this course, we were given certain assignments that would make us learn from and work responsively and inclusively with diverse individuals, groups, and organizations to build more just, equitable, and sustainable communities. Nevertheless, this course also taught me to be able to communicate effectively in Spanish in three modes: interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational, and in a culturally appropriate manner in a variety of social and professional settings and circumstances at the Advanced Low level of language proficiency one of the requirements for this class was to look for a specific Latin site that was needing help, which made me focus on a middle school where most of the staff are Anglo. To add, this site interested me the most because it has a large percentage of students who are migrants and some others that have been in the United States for some time but have not been able to dominate the language. Another requirement for this class was to do 30 community hours of service and through this process assist these students with whatever needs they have. This course has helped me to have more knowledge about social, cultural, and professional identities to systems of power, privilege, and oppression. After learning how to deal with this issue, I developed skills to help the community. Finally, after completing my community hours I had to do a mini presentation to expose what I had learned from this site, what changes need to be made, and how we can continue to help the community in order for them to be successful.
