MLO 5: CULTURAL INTERNALIZATION & LANGUAGE IMMERSION
Students demonstrate that they have actively immersed themselves in authentic Hispanic cultural and linguistic environments and have internalized the language and cultural experiences, from which they have developed personal understanding and new perspectives of Hispanic communities.
Under this criterion, I have completed SPAN 301s SL in the Latino Community (Fall 2022) SPAN 495 Hispanic Cinema (Spring 2023). For this MLO one thing that is taught is the immersion in the Hispanic community and teach us different strategies to support our community. In SPAN 301s, which helped me to reach the objective and prepare me. In SPAN 301s I learned some of the issues Latinos face in Salinas. Thanks to this course, I was able to develop some strategies and skills to assist this community, specifically the migrant students. A requirement for this class was to complete a total of 30 hours at a place of our choice. I decided to work with migrant students/English learners.
I wanted to see and experience the challenges these students face and what services/programs they need in order to achieve their dream, which is to learn English. The students I worked with had just come from different countries such as Mexico, El Salvador and Honduras. This was very interesting because I really enjoy learning and experiencing new cultures. I learned that these children often experience linguistic discrimination and sometimes are not taken seriously by some staff. In addition, they also struggle with their class due to the limited resources available at this school. These kids have all their courses in English, but only one translator for a group of 80 English learners. Also, the strategies I developed 301s and implemented with these kids and had great results. I had every student briefly research a university and then compare the university's services and programs to the school they were currently attending. They also had to determine what program they wish they had and what changes they would want to see. This course really provided me with useful tools and I will be able to put them in practice once I became a teacher. Finally, we had a 10 min presentation for this class where we would explain the observations I made at my site, what changes need to be made and what's something staff are doing to support these students.
